Employment
In 2022, the number of employees in legal occupations in the United States totaled 1.22 million. When broken down by category, the largest share of those employed within this industry worked as lawyers. Over half of 2022 law graduates in the United States had taken up employment with law firms by April 2023 and the share of unemployed law graduates has fallen steeply since 2013.
Diversity
Women are still underrepresented in the legal profession. In 2022, women made up approximately 39 percent of the share of lawyers in the United States. In a study of the 100 best law firms for women, the gender distribution of employees in leadership positions at these firms remained low at less than 25 percent. Furthermore, the share of non-white equity partners at law firms in the United States was extremely low, although these figures have shown slight signs of improvement over the last few years.
